Ohio state troopers aiming to reduce distracted drivers

Even though many drivers may be aware that texting or talking on the phone while driving is a dangerous act, drivers still take both their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road. They may not be aware that distracted driving also includes daydreaming, while behind the wheel. Unfortunately, this completely avoidable behavior causes thousands of deaths and injuries across the country in 2012.

Ohio state troopers are joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in targeting distracted driving in a national effort during the second week of April. In a campaign of heightened enforcement, they will try to reduce behaviors that can cause accidents and stem from distracted driving, such as violations of marked lanes, aggressive driving and driving left of center.

Troopers also reminded drivers that texting and driving is against the law in the

State. Every time a driver receives a text they take their eyes off the road, a car can travel the length of a football field. In a situation where road conditions can change in an instant, traveling so far without eyes on the road has the potential to be deadly.

Distracted driving, a completely preventable act, causes many preventable accidents every year, and, despite the police's best efforts, car accidents may continue to happen. Ohio residents injured at the hands of a distracted driver may be able to file a personal injury claim, though they cannot quantify the injuries and the trauma they suffer. A successful claim may be one way to ease the financial burden that is associated with a sudden accident, such as medical expenses and pain and suffering.
