Grass clippings are dangerous for motorcyclists

Spring and summer are times when the weather is wonderful for motorcyclists, but these are also times when lawn care is important. There must be a balance between making lawns look pristine and helping to keep people on the road safe.

Homeowners should remember that grass clippings are dangerous for motorcyclists. Bagging grass clippings or keeping them away from the road can help to reduce the hazards that come to motorcycles.

A threat to traction

When grass clippings are blown or dumped onto the road, especially after a fresh mowing, they create a slick, unstable surface. This is particularly dangerous for motorcycles, which rely heavily on tire grip for stability. Unlike cars, motorcycles only have two wheels, and that smaller contact patch with the road makes them more susceptible to traction loss.

Grass clippings can act like ball bearings on pavement—especially on curves or when a rider needs to brake suddenly. Hitting a patch unexpectedly can cause the motorcycle to slide or fishtail, increasing the risk of a crash.

Motorcycles are inherently less forgiving than cars. A small loss of control that might mean a skid in a car could send a rider to the ground. Because of this, hazards like grass clippings aren’t just inconvenient—they can be life-threatening. What’s worse, riders often don’t see the clippings until it’s too late to react.

Motorcyclists who are injured in a crash should ensure they get immediate medical care, but this can be costly. They may choose to seek compensation for the financial damages they’re dealing with because of the wreck. Working with an individual who understands the circumstances and can assist with the claim can be beneficial.
