Getting your car ready for summer

On Behalf of | May 29, 2023 | Car Accidents

Summer is nearly here. As a result, you’ll want to make some adjustments to your vehicle to get it ready for safe summer driving

This is going to be especially important if you have a young driver in the family. June, July and August are known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers across the U.S.

Is your vehicle safe to drive?

Even if your vehicle seems ready to go already, it’s important to do some system checks before the summer heat arrives in earnest:

  • Check the cooling system: Check the coolant level and quality, inspect hoses and belts for any signs of wear or leaks and consider flushing and refilling the cooling system if necessary.
  • Inspect the battery: High temperatures can put additional strain on your car’s battery. Clean any corrosion from the terminals and make sure they are securely tightened. If your battery is older or showing signs of weakness, consider having it tested and possibly replaced to avoid unexpected breakdowns.
  • Check the tires: Inspect the tread depth and ensure that it meets the recommended levels. Check tire pressure regularly, as hot weather can cause tire pressure to increase. Also, examine the tires for any signs of damage or uneven wear, and rotate or replace them as needed.
  • Test the air conditioning system: As the temperature rises, a functioning air conditioning system becomes essential. Run your car’s air conditioning system and check for proper cooling. If you notice any issues such as weak airflow or warm air, get it inspected by a professional technician who can diagnose and repair any problems.

Also, make sure that your oil has recently been changed and that you never let your gas level dip too low. Remember to consult your car’s owner manual for specific maintenance recommendations and, if needed, consult a professional mechanic for assistance in getting your car summer-ready.

Good maintenance on your vehicle can help you avoid accidents — but nothing is foolproof. If you end up in a wreck because of another driver’s mistakes, find out more about your options for compensation.
