Braking safely in your vehicle

There are numerous aspects involved in safe driving practices, with one of the most important being knowing how to come to a safe stop. While cars are increasingly equipped with technological assistance such as Anti-lock braking systems (ABS), this doesn’t mean that all you have to do is simply slam on the brakes.

Safe braking in your vehicle requires a multifaceted approach. Outlined below are some important things to keep in mind.

Managing your speed

There are legal speed restrictions in Cincinnati, Ohio, and these should always be adhered to. However, you need to be able to adapt to the specific circumstances you are in. If there are roadworks in place, high volumes of traffic, schools or other potential hazards, then you may need to reduce your speed further. The lower your speed is the less distance you will have to travel before coming to a stop.

A steady stop is safer

Slamming on the breaks is only really necessary in an emergency situation, and it’s typically not the most efficient way to come to a stop. Gradual braking is far more efficient and it means that you have more control over the vehicle. Your suspension will react better to gradual braking. You can also use the gears to assist with this process. By shifting to a lower gear, your engine will work in tandem with the brakes in bringing your vehicle to a safe stop.

Safe braking practices can help to get you out of tight spots. Sadly, it isn’t always enough to prevent an accident. A negligent road user may still have caused you severe injuries. If this is the situation you find yourself in, make sure you seek some legal guidance
