Car accidents: 1 dead in Ohio crash

A passenger in a single-vehicle accident was pronounced dead following the Bazetta Township crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the crash, which claimed the life of one person. No charges have yet been filed against the driver, but as with most fatal car accidents, this one remains under careful investigation by law enforcement authorities.

According to the accident report, sometime around 12:11 a.m. the morning of March 5, the driver of a vehicle headed eastbound on State Route 5 appeared to lose control of the vehicle. The car exited the left side of the road and entered the median. The driver overcorrected while attempting to get back on the road, causing the car to drive off the left side a second time before striking a cable barrier.

The passenger in the vehicle, who has not been identified publicly pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, but the driver miraculously avoided injury. Police believe the driver may have been speeding, contributing to the crash.

If Ohio police determine this accident, like many other car accidents, was indeed caused by reckless driving on the part of the driver, that individual could face criminal charges for his or her role in the fatal crash. Separately, the family of the deceased passenger will be entitled under state law to file a wrongful death suit against the driver as well, this time in civil court. They are free to offer any evidence of speeding uncovered by police to support their claim for monetary damages.
