Cincinnati seeing an increase in pedestrian accidents

Many people in the area enjoy walking through their neighborhoods, along the river and downtown. Walking is an excellent way to get places, enjoy being outside and to get some exercise. Most of the time, pedestrians are able to safely share the street with vehicles, but lately, pedestrian accidents have been on the rise in the area.

In 2018, at least 428 people were hit by a car in the Cincinnati area. The most alarming part is that this is a 46 percent increase over 2013. This number means there is an average of eight people getting hit by a car every week.

Thirteen of these injured pedestrians were students at our public schools. Experts say the increase in pedestrian-car accidents is because of cell phone use, distracted driving and roads that were designed for cars and not pedestrians. In addition, the rise of people driving SUVs may also be causing these accidents as well.

No one expects their loved one will be injured because of a car accident or a pedestrian accident. Unfortunately, hundreds of families across the area have faced this reality. No one can prepare for this kind of accident. Suddenly, a family is facing thousands of dollars in medical bills and lost wages, along with the emotional trauma. But, compensation may be available for medical expenses, future medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.

An unexpected accident can cause a family unexpected financial and emotional stress. It is important to hold a negligent driver responsible for their mistake.
