The serious nature of traumatic brain injuries

Traumatic brain injuries contribute to deaths and cause permanent disability in the United States each year. In fact, traumatic brain injuries are a contributing factor in a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States. During 2010, approximately 2.5 million victims suffered a traumatic brain injury. Brain injuries can range in severity, but are always likely to be physically, financially and emotionally costly to victims and their families.

Traumatic brain injury can result in decreased cognitive function, such as attention, memory or focus; disrupted motor function, such as weakness in the extremities and impaired coordination and balance; impaired sensation, such as hearing, vision and impaired perception and touch; and emotional challenges, such as personality changes, depression, anxiety, aggression or limited impulse control.

The fall out from a traumatic brain injury, or “TBI,” can impact every aspect of the victim’s life, including their relationships with family and friends who may struggle to recognize them following a TBI; their ability to maintain stable employment; and their ability to care for themselves and perform routine daily tasks. The treatment of traumatic brain injuries can be extensive and costly. It is important to have early management and treatment of a traumatic brain injury.

When a victim suffers a traumatic brain injury in a motorcycle or other type of catastrophic accident, personal injury legal protections can help them with the physical, financial and emotional damages associated with a traumatic brain injury and the process of recovering from a traumatic brain injury. If a negligent driver has caused an accident that resulted in the victim suffering a TBI, it is important for the victim and victim’s family to be familiar with the way personal injury legal protections can help.
