How dangerous is distracted driving?

While modern technology has been nearly universally embraced by our younger generation, residents from Cincinnati, Ohio, and the surrounding area have come to learn that it comes with its own set of problems. Social media has become a phenomenon in the world, and many members of our younger generation find themselves glued to their tablet or smartphone. While this is not necessarily dangerous at home, younger drivers are also finding it hard to stay off their phones while on the road. And the results can be deadly.

According to the United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 3,477 deaths on the roads as a result of distracted driving in 2015. This is not entirely attributed to cellphone use, as distracted driving can take many forms including but not limited to: eating, applying makeup, talking to other passengers and playing with the radio.

In addition to nearly 3,500 deaths, there were a total of 391,000 Americans who were injured as a result of distracted driving. The administration estimates that as many as 660,000 drivers during the daylight hours are on their phone at some point each day.

If you or someone you love has been the victim of a car accident resulting from a distracted driver, you may have options available to you. Victims in a car accident may be entitled to compensation for their injuries, which includes medical expenses, pain and suffering and even lost wages. In order to see if you may qualify, you may want to speak with a law firm familiar with personal injuries.
