What are the texting and driving laws in Ohio?

Much is said on this blog about the dangers of texting and driving, but many drivers around the state may not know what the actual law regarding this behavior is in Ohio. Only 14 states ban all drivers from using handheld cellphones while driving whereas 46 ban text messaging for all drivers. Where does Ohio fall in this spectrum?

Ohio prohibits all cellphone use for drivers under the age of 18 and texting and driving is banned for all drivers. However, teen drivers admit to being the ones who engage in this behavior the most, even though the dangers of this activity are repeatedly highlighted.

Since seeing is believing, one major telephone subscription provider has launched a program called 'It can wait', that goes to high schools around the country and uses simulators to show teenagers the dangers of not only texting and driving but also of engaging in other distractions while behind the wheel. In their presentation at a local high school in Ohio, various people came and gave speeches and videos were shown where people talked about their real life experience of getting involved in a car accident and how the catastrophic injuries completely changed the course of their life. In addition to this, virtual reality simulations were also provided.

Despite these warnings and the criminal penalties involved with texting and driving, many still engage in this behavior and cause car crashes that are completely avoidable. Educating teenagers about the risks involved and letting them experience it through simulations is one way to reduce accidents that result in, but this practice most likely will not completely eliminate accidents. In such tragic situations, seeking the assistance of an experienced attorney can help those involved formulate a strong plan of legal action.
