Drunk driver kills young man, flees accident scene

| Jun 27, 2014 | Drunk Driving Accidents

A fatal car accident can leave a victim’s family emotionally and financially distressed, in addition to wanting answers as to why the accident happened. Family members of the victim may choose to file charges if an investigation reveals negligence, or in a recent Ohio case, drunk driving, contributed to a victim’s death.

A 28-year-old man is dead after a drunk driver allegedly crossed the center line on Interstate 77 near Canton, Ohio, on a recent Friday morning. According to reports, the 20-year-old drunk driver’s mini-van crashed head-on into the 28-year-old man’s vehicle. Reports indicate that the victim’s father passed by the scene of the accident and recognized his son’s vehicle.

After the drunk driving accident, the 20-year-old man fled the scene. Police later found him hiding in a ditch, uninjured, nearly two miles away from the accident scene. Witnesses also observed a second man standing near the mini-van, but police were unable to locate a second suspect in a search performed by an Ohio State Patrol helicopter and Stark County deputies.

Allegedly, the drunk driver had two times the legal limit of alcohol in his system. He was taken to jail and is now facing charges of driving without a license, hit-skip, OVI and aggravated vehicular homicide.

In addition to the charges the 20-year-old man is facing, he may also face wrongful death charges filed by the victim’s family. Although no amount of money can bring back the victim, filing a wrongful death suit may bring some financial relief to help with funeral costs and other associated damages.
