Five motorcycle accidents this month in Ohio

With Memorial Day approaching, many people may be anxious to get a good start to their holiday by leaving the office early and trying to beat the traffic. Some people may be too anxious however, and in their rush to get wherever they are going they may drive rashly, endangering not only their own lives but also the lives of everyone else on the highway. Last year was the safest year the Ohio State Highway Patrol has ever seen and they are making efforts to make sure this year is even better.

With three motorcycle accidents over two weekends, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is already on the lookout for speeding and rule violations. Five riders have already been injured this month in motorcycle crashes in Ohio. One was critically injured and another suffered severe head injuries.

Under state law, anyone under the age of 18 on a motorcycle or anyone with less than a year of experience must wear not only a helmet but also protective eye devices. Passengers must also wear helmets. In addition to this, drivers wanting to operate motorcycles need to have a motorcycle endorsement on their license.

Despite these precautions, motorcycle accidents do happen and often they are more likely than car accidents to result in injury or death because motorcyclists do not have the protection of an automobile body around them. Ohio residents injured in a crash may be able to file a personal injury claim against a negligent driver. Holding the negligent driver accountable for their actions may help ease the financial burden from lost income and medical bills resulting from the accident.
