Riding season has begun!
Before you go out driving in the nice Ohio weather, it's important to remember that, for both motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists, safety around a motorcycle is absolutely important! Motorcyclists are 5-7 times more likely to be in a motor vehicle accident, and when they are, the injuries tend to be far worse.
· Before you grab some sun on the back of your bike, you need to take stock. Chances are, you haven't driven your bike in a while, so make sure it's in good working order.
· I know you've heard this one a million times before, but always wear a helmet! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2009 that helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in 2008.
· Wear bright colors and keep your headlights on. This helps other drivers see you!
· Be aware! Shoulder-check your blind spots or install blind-spot mirrors. In a majority of crashes involving cars that hit motorcyclists, the driver states that he didn't see the motorcyclist at all.
By following some basic motorcycle safety tips, both drivers and riders can be a lot safer on the road. For more information on motorcycle safety, visit the NHTSA website.
