Winter is here and for many Ohio drivers, that means the roads will be covered in snow and ice on and off for the rest of the winter season. Snow and ice can make the roads very dangerous at times; when you add freezing temperatures to the mix, the risk of getting into a car accident increases.

Before you even start driving, the Ohio Department of Public Safety recommends that drivers make sure their battery, tires and windshield wipers are all in good working condition. They also recommend making sure your vehicle has enough antifreeze and windshield fluid that won’t freeze up this winter.
In the event that you get into a car accident or your vehicle stalls while driving, it is important to stock your vehicle with items that will keep you safe and prepared during an emergency. You should include jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, water, food, any necessary medicine and an ice scraper in your vehicle in case of an emergency where you are stuck in your vehicle.
Once you are on the road, it is important to take safe driving precautions depending on the road conditions and weather. Drivers should be sure to leave enough room between vehicles to prevent a rear-end collision. It is important to be aware of the vehicles around you in case a vehicle spins out or isn’t able to stop.
As always, drive at a safe speed for the road conditions and visibility. Never drive under the influence of alcohol, wear your seat belt and don’t drive distracted. It is also important not to use your cellphone or other electronic devices when the road conditions are snowy or icy.
