Watch out for deer this fall in Ohio

Now that fall is here, drivers in Ohio should be aware of the increased risk of hitting a deer. The fall months see the most car accidents involving deer in Ohio so it is important for drivers to be cautious while driving, especially near corn fields and wooded areas.

Car-deer collisions can happen at any time throughout the day, but more than 50 percent of crashes happen after 5 p.m., according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Another common time for deer-car collisions is in the morning, with 20 percent of accidents happening early in the morning.

Roads that commonly see more deer have deer crossing signs in Ohio but there are many other roads that drivers should be aware of the risk of hitting a deer. Deer-car collisions can result in very serious injuries as well as damage to a driver's vehicle. That is why it is important for drivers to be cautious when driving in areas with high deer populations.

In addition to being cautious when driving in the early morning and evening hours, drivers should also follow the tips below to reduce the risk of hitting a deer:

  • Always wear seat belts and follow the speed limit
  • Use caution and slow down in areas with deer crossing signs
  • Deer travel in packs so expect to see more deer if only one is in the road
  • Don't swerve out of the way to avoid hitting a deer as this increases the risk of hitting another vehicle or object

Hitting a deer can be a scary experience but drivers who are involved in a deer-car collision should try to remain calm and call the police to report the accident.
