Riding season has begun!
Before you go out driving in the nice Ohio weather, it’s important to remember that, for both motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists, safety around a motorcycle is absolutely important! Motorcyclists are 5-7 times more likely to be in a motor vehicle accident, and when they are, the injuries tend to be far worse.
For Riders
· Before you grab some sun on the back of your bike, you need to take stock. Chances are, you haven’t driven your bike in a while, so make sure it’s in good working order.
· I know you’ve heard this one a million times before, but always wear a helmet! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2009 that helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in 2008.
· Wear bright colors and keep your headlights on. This helps other drivers see you!
For Drivers
· Share the road. Give motorcyclists a wide berth. Yes, some motorcycle riders act reckless (So do some drivers) which is why you should always give riders a wide berth.
· Be aware! Shoulder-check your blind spots or install blind-spot mirrors. In a majority of crashes involving cars that hit motorcyclists, the driver states that he didn’t see the motorcyclist at all.
