Mock trials are, in many respects, the cornerstone of education for future litigators. Every year thousands of students across the country participate in mock trial competitions at high school, college, and law school levels. Last week, Sylvania Southview high school took home 1st place at the Ohio Mock Trial State finals.

At the KY High School Mock Trial Competition,it’s Personal injury Attorney Christopher Byers is judging the competition.

“It is good to see young people learn and take interest in the law,” Byers remarked about trials, which are a staple of legal education across the country. “I was involved in mock trial when I was in high school, and I am glad to be able to give back.”

A 2005 graduate of Salmon P. Chase Law School, Byers has been a member of the Ohio bar since 2005 and the Kentucky bar since 2006. Since then he has been a civil litigation attorney at Gregory S. Young Co., LPA in Cincinnati, OH, serving all of Ohio and Northern Kentucky with personal injury cases.

The American mock Trial Association (AMTA) remarks that “Through engaging in trial simulations in competition with teams from other institutions, students develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as a knowledge of legal practices and procedures.”

Rounds 1 and 2 of the trial competition will be on Friday, March 14 at 1:00pm and 5:30pm respectively. Byers will preside over rounds 3 and 4 on Saturday, March 15 at 9:15am and 1:30-4:30pm.
